For many travellers arriving in the Maldives, the journey to paradise begins long before they step onto a resort island. It begins at the airport, where guests are welcomed with warm smiles, reassurance after long flights, and the feeling that they are already being cared for. Behind many of those first impressions is Sama Mahira, a Maldivian hospitality professional whose passion, professionalism, and dedication have shaped a remarkable career in luxury tourism.
Born and raised in Malé, Sama always had a love for travelling and once imagined herself working for an airline. During her school years, however, she decided to study tourism and soon discovered a passion for hospitality. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Maldives and inspired by the rapid growth of the tourism industry, she realised the opportunities hospitality could offer local Maldivians while allowing them to represent their country and culture on a global stage.
Her journey began shortly after school when she started working as a Guest Relations Officer, a role that also included airport representation duties. The experience immediately felt like the perfect combination of travel and people-focused hospitality. More importantly, it gave her a sense of pride in representing the Maldives as a local woman working at the frontline of the industry.
Over the years, Sama steadily built her career through determination and a willingness to grow. She first worked in local tourism in Maafushi before joining The Somerset Hotel as a Guest Relations Officer. Her dedication quickly earned her a promotion to Senior Guest Relations Officer, where she handled airport representation and reservations while strengthening her connection to guest-facing hospitality.
Looking to challenge herself further, she later joined JOALI Maldives during its pre-opening phase as a Transport Coordinator before being promoted to Butler within just six months. The role confirmed something she had long known about herself: she thrived in dynamic environments where no two days were ever the same. “A desk job alone was never going to be enough,” she says.
Her career later took her to Soneva Jani, where she worked as a Butler for two and a half years, gaining valuable experience in personalised luxury service. She eventually returned to the JOALI family and joined JOALI BEING as Butler Manager, becoming the resort’s first female Butler Manager and overseeing the day-to-day frontline operation and team. “At JOALI, I never felt that being a local Maldivian woman was a limitation,” she says. “If anything, it was celebrated.”
Today, Sama serves as Cluster Airport Host for both JOALI Maldives and JOALI BEING. Her role involves coordinating arrivals and departures, monitoring flights, preparing lounges, and ensuring every guest experiences a seamless journey from arrival to farewell. Detailed guest records and personalised touches are an important part of her work, especially for returning visitors who continue to choose JOALI as their Maldivian home.
While luxury hospitality often appears effortless, Sama explains that the reality can be demanding. Delays, changing schedules, and tired travellers can quickly create stressful situations, but she has learned the importance of remaining calm, patient, and understanding under pressure. “Most of the time, guests are reacting to the situation, not to you,” she explains. “People simply want to feel heard.”
One of the greatest rewards of her career comes from welcoming returning guests and hearing them say they are “back home” at JOALI. For her, those moments represent the true meaning of hospitality and the lasting connections that can be created through thoughtful service.
Sama also believes that what makes JOALI unique begins long before guests reach the island itself. From the elegant airport lounges and transfer experience to the smallest details of the welcome, every part of the journey is carefully designed to reflect the JOALI identity and create a sense of comfort from the very beginning.
Beyond her own achievements, Sama hopes her story encourages more young Maldivians, especially women, to pursue careers in hospitality. She believes the industry offers not only professional opportunities but also personal growth, confidence, and resilience. “You belong in this space just as much as anyone,” she says.
Through years of dedication and experience, Sama Mahira has become far more than an airport host. She has become a reflection of the warmth, professionalism, and genuine hospitality that continue to make the Maldives unforgettable for travellers from around the world.
