Vakkaru Maldives has once again received the Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence, marking the fifth consecutive year that its signature wine cellar, Vakkaru Reserve, has earned this international accolade. The resort remains the only property in the Maldives to achieve this distinction five times, underscoring its dedication to thoughtful curation and exceptional wine experiences.

Nestled at the heart of the island, Vakkaru Reserve offers a refined and intimate setting that showcases a selection of 620 carefully chosen wine labels. Head Sommelier Retheesh Kakkareth Mohanan and Assistant Sommelier Vasantha Kumar Nadarajah are responsible for assembling the collection, which features notable vintages such as a Château Cheval Blanc Premier Grand Cru Classé A trio from 1983, 1985, and 1990; Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 2009; Krug Clos du Mesnil Blanc de Blanc Brut 2002; and Château Pavie 1982. Each bottle carries a story, offering guests a window into a particular moment in winemaking history.

General Manager Teddy Susanto Wiryawan described the recognition as a reflection of the resort’s philosophy of quality over quantity. “Our goal with Vakkaru Reserve has never been to overwhelm, but to create a collection that encourages introspection — wines that leave an impression beyond the glass,” he said. “This fifth award is not a destination, but a signal to continue listening — to winemakers, to the terroir, and to the guests who come seeking something meaningful.”

Beyond its cellar of distinguished labels, Vakkaru offers immersive experiences that deepen guests' appreciation for wine. These include expert-led tastings, personalized food and wine pairings, and the resort’s signature Wine & Chocolate Pairing Experience. This unique tasting features house-made artisanal chocolates matched with select wines in creative combinations, such as a Yuzu and Matcha Bonbon paired with Sauvignon Blanc, or an Espresso Bonbon alongside a rich Tawny Port.

Vakkaru Reserve stands out not through grand displays but through the quiet elegance of its offerings. With an approach rooted in memory, reflection, and discovery, the resort continues to define its wine programme with purpose and depth, making it a destination for discerning enthusiasts in search of something truly special.
