Two decommissioned Air Maldives Dornier aircraft are scheduled to be submerged in Kaafu Kudagiri Lagoon, marking the start of an ambitious project to create a new dive wreck site. This initiative, a joint effort by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), aims to elevate Kudagiri’s status as a recreational hotspot.

Preparations are actively progressing, with the designated area being cleared to facilitate the planned submersion. The dive site is expected to enrich the region’s appeal, providing divers with fresh experiences while fostering marine biodiversity. The development is poised to draw both local enthusiasts and international visitors, adding a new dimension to the Maldives’ tourism offerings through expanded marine-based activities.

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report has been conducted, identifying potential challenges tied to transporting and sinking the aircraft. It highlights risks to workers and seafarers, recommending training and safety measures to reduce hazards during the process.
