The early hours of the morning are the quietest, but for a rookie security officer, they are also the most demanding. In 2015, a young Abdulla Anees navigated the intense isolation of overnight shifts, standing vigilant while the rest of the Maldives slept. It was a world of sudden medical emergencies, volatile situations, and the constant pressure to remain alert for hours at a time. There were no shortcuts. Respect had to be earned through absolute reliability, honesty, and consistent performance in the dark.
This is where Anees's career in security began. It was a formative experience with GAGE Pvt Ltd where he learned the fundamentals of security operations. Over a decade later, those early lessons continue to shape him as Security Manager at Leo Trading Pvt Ltd—a career built on discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to continuous learning.
It was never a career he had carefully planned. Born in Th. Omadhoo, Anees spent his early childhood on the island before moving to Malé with his family at the age of eight. Experiencing life in both a close-knit island community and the nation's bustling capital exposed him to two very different environments. This unique duality helped him develop deep adaptability and a strong sense of community while instilling the core values that guide him today.
Growing up, he was taught the vital importance of respect, honesty, humility, and supporting those around him. Looking back, he believes those early lessons shaped not only his personality but also his approach to leadership and teamwork.
"I was taught to treat everyone with fairness and respect, regardless of their position or background," he says. Those childhood principles became the foundation of his professional life.
When Anees first entered the security profession, he wasn't pursuing a lifelong dream. Like many young Maldivians, he simply wanted to build a stable future. However, he viewed security as an opportunity to challenge himself, develop personal discipline, and build professional skills. What began as a personal challenge gradually transformed into a deep, lifelong passion.
"I chose this career to challenge myself," he explains. "Over time, that challenge became a passion."
His early years were spent entirely within hospitality security, focusing heavily on guest safety and customer relations. Rather than viewing the grueling nature of the hospitality baseline shifts as setbacks, he chose to see them as opportunities for growth. Through these early environments, he mastered situational awareness combined with calm decision-making under pressure—a technical skill set that would come to define his operational style.
What kept him in the profession when things got hard was a growing realization of the profound, quiet weight of his role. He stayed because he began to see the tangible, positive impact that dedicated security professionals have on real people, organizations, and complex operations.
By continuously seeking new responsibilities, learning from experienced colleagues, and refining his leadership skills, Anees steadily progressed through supervisory positions. Throughout this journey, continuous learning became less of an intentional goal and more of a daily habit.
His eventual transition from hospitality security into logistics and industrial operations at Leo Trading Pvt Ltd introduced an entirely different operational landscape. Rather than focusing primarily on guest interactions, the new role demanded a broader, high-stakes responsibility for asset protection, strict operational continuity, and close coordination across complex supply chain departments.
Today, his responsibilities extend far beyond traditional security operations. Each day begins with reviewing incident reports from the previous shift before coordinating security coverage across multiple operational sites. Site inspections, corporate meetings, risk assessments, internal investigations, and supporting field employees all form part of a role where no two days are ever the same.
For Anees, that unpredictability is one of the profession's greatest strengths. "What I enjoy most is leading a team, solving challenges and contributing to the safety and success of the organization," he says.
While security is often viewed as a behind-the-scenes function, he believes its success is measured entirely by what never happens. When operations run smoothly, incidents are proactively prevented, and employees feel safe, he knows the team has done its job well.
His leadership philosophy has also evolved significantly over the years. One of the biggest influences on his professional development has been Mr. Sawadh, the Managing Director of Leo Trading Pvt Ltd. Before joining the company, Anees admits he viewed leadership primarily as directing others and ensuring tasks were completed. Working under Mr. Sawadh changed that perspective entirely.
"He taught me that leadership is about inspiring people, building trust and creating opportunities for others to grow," Anees says.
Those lessons continue to shape the way he manages his own team. Rather than focusing solely on enforcing rigid rules, he believes a leader should be approachable, fair, and consistent. Building trust, maintaining open communication, and leading by example are qualities he considers just as important as technical knowledge. He also firmly believes security works best when it is viewed as an active partner rather than simply an enforcement function.
"Security is not just about enforcing rules," he emphasizes. "It is about helping people, supporting daily operations, and creating an environment where everyone feels safe."
At Leo Trading, security operates smoothly alongside logistics, warehousing, and transport departments to support corporate operations rather than interrupt them. Through daily collaboration and constant communication, his team works proactively to identify potential hazards and operational risks before they become costly problems.
For Anees, the true reward of his role comes from a mix of team progression and organizational recognition. One of the most fulfilling moments of any day is seeing his team confidently perform their responsibilities without constant supervision. Witnessing individuals grow in confidence, combined with receiving recognition from top management and seeing the deep trust the organization places in the security team's work, reminds him that strong security is built on human relationships just as much as strict procedures.
"I enjoy seeing people improve and succeed," he says. "Helping others grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my job."
Like every leadership role, however, security management comes with difficult days. Emergencies, unexpected operational pressures, and high-risk situations require calm decision-making under pressure. Through years of experience, Anees has learned to handle these stressful situations by actively listening to team concerns, prioritizing issues objectively, and maintaining a steady demeanor.
"If I remain calm and confident, it helps the team stay focused," he explains. Rather than dwelling on mistakes, he prefers to focus on practical, immediate solutions while ensuring lessons are logged to prevent similar situations in the future.
Looking back on his journey from Security officer to Security Manager, Anees says the position itself is not what makes him most proud. Instead, he values the exact path that brought him there. The long hours, demanding responsibilities, and countless lessons learned along the way have shaped both his professional career and his personal outlook. Equally meaningful are the professional relationships he has built and the young officers he has had the opportunity to mentor throughout his career.
For young Maldivians considering security as a profession, he hopes they look beyond common misconceptions. Many people see security as little more than standing at a gate, but Anees believes the profession demands high-level leadership, communication, sharp responsibility, and sound decision-making. It is a career that rewards long-term commitment and offers genuine opportunities for upward mobility. His own career, he says, is proof of that.
If he could offer one piece of advice to someone hoping to follow a similar path from the ground up, it would be simple: never stop learning.
"Take every stage of the journey seriously," he says. "Skills can be learned, but attitude, honesty and professionalism will always set you apart."
For Anees, meaningful work has never been defined by a job title alone. It comes from knowing that his decisions help protect people, support business operations, and create an environment where others can perform their work safely and confidently. It is found in the trust placed in him by colleagues, the development of his team, and the opportunity to make a positive impact every single day.
From a young security officer determined to prove himself to a manager responsible for protecting people, assets, and operations, Abdulla Anees has built a career one deliberate step at a time. And for him, every step has been built on the exact same principles that first guided him years ago—discipline, respect, and a genuine commitment to serving others.
