In recognition of three major international observances focused on marine protection, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has introduced a dedicated guest programme marking World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. The first week of June is being highlighted with a series of immersive experiences that invite guests to engage deeply with marine conservation, sustainability, education and community connection. The resort programme spans a wide range of island-based activities and experiences developed together with its internal team and partners, The Manta Trust and Ocean Group. Across interactive learning sessions, wellness offerings and conservation-driven initiatives, guests are given opportunities to explore, appreciate and actively support marine life while strengthening their connection to the natural environment.
To observe World Reef Awareness Day on 1 June, the resort’s Planet Trekkers kids’ club is hosting an ocean-themed origami workshop created in collaboration with The Manta Trust for younger guests. InterContinental Maldives has maintained its partnership with The Manta Trust since 2019, working with one of the world’s leading manta ray research organisations focused on global conservation through research, education and collaboration. Following the day’s educational activities, families gather in the Planet Trekkers garden for an outdoor screening of Finding Nemo under the night sky.
The programme continues on 8 June for World Oceans Day, with the Finding Nemo theme extending into a series of interactive family experiences across the island. Guests participate in the Finding Nemo Expedition, an island-wide treasure hunt designed to encourage exploration of marine life and ocean discovery. Younger participants are also invited to enjoy ocean-themed cookie decorating and face-painting activities throughout the day.
Families take part in a Marine Animal Sandcastle Building Competition, which also includes a shoreline clean-up activity aimed at encouraging environmental responsibility. Children involved are recognised with certificates and an Ocean Protector badge as part of the Ocean Guardians Ceremony, celebrating their creativity and participation in the competition. Later in the day, guests come together for a special screening of A Turtle's Tale: Sammy's Adventures, before moving to the pool bar for an Ocean Quiz, an interactive trivia session focused on marine life and ocean conservation.
Throughout the three-day series of marine and environmental celebrations, guests can also experience the 90-minute Ocean Bliss Ritual at AVI Spa, an ocean-inspired wellness treatment designed to restore both body and mind. The treatment begins with a mineral-rich sea salt body scrub, followed by a detoxifying seaweed clay wrap that leaves the skin refreshed and nourished. AVI Spa itself is designed in harmony with the surrounding environment, drawing inspiration from the Indian Ocean and offering a calm space for relaxation and renewal.
Culinary experiences form another key element of the programme, led by an exclusive Ocean to Table dining experience curated by Chef Arun at The Lighthouse, the resort’s flagship Mediterranean restaurant. This dining experience highlights responsibly sourced seafood and island-inspired flavours, crafted to reflect the sustainability and natural richness of the Indian Ocean. Set against sweeping 360-degree views of the resort and turquoise waters, guests enjoy seasonal ingredients in an overwater dining setting. The resort also offers a range of dining venues including The Fish Market, Café Umi, and The Collective, while The Retreat provides a quieter adults-only space. Guests can also enjoy tropical cocktails and fine wines at the Sunset Bar and Wine Cellar.
A strong focus of the programme is guest participation in environmental education and conservation work. A Coral Restoration Workshop offers insight into reef restoration efforts supported by The Manta Trust, highlighting ongoing work to restore coral ecosystems in the Maldives and beyond. The session builds awareness of reef preservation and the importance of protecting marine environments for future generations.
As part of ongoing sustainability initiatives, guests are also invited to contribute directly to the island through a lagoon clean-up activity. The programme concludes with an educational interview session hosted by Ocean Group, focusing on sustainable fishing practices, followed by a commemorative cake-cutting ceremony with The Manta Trust, bringing guests and the resort community together in support of ocean awareness and conservation.
