At a time when constant connectivity dominates daily life, the simple act of reading—uninterrupted, unhurried, and immersed in nature—has increasingly become a luxury. According to recent trend forecasting by BBC, literary-inspired travel is expected to remain a defining trend in 2026, as luxury travellers look for destinations that combine meaningful storytelling with exceptional natural environments.
Responding to this shift, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has introduced its new Beach Reads programming, a resort-wide initiative aimed at encouraging guests to slow down, disconnect, and reconnect with themselves and others in the peaceful setting of Raa Atoll.
Central to the programme is a rotating Book of the Month, carefully selected to align with the principles of slow travel and to evoke a strong sense of place. Before arrival, guests are informed of the featured title for the month, which may include contemporary fiction, informative non-fiction, or classic works. Each selection reflects themes such as wellness, nature, and adventure, all of which underpin the resort experience. Guests can request a complimentary physical copy of the book, delivered personally by the Island Curator, removing the need to travel with reading materials. While reading is often a solitary activity, the initiative also creates shared opportunities for discussion and discovery, offering a collective literary experience that complements island life.
From May 1, selected areas across the resort are being transformed into dedicated Book Nooks designed for quiet relaxation. These spaces include shaded cabanas, a netted lounge area suspended within the pool at the adults-only The Retreat, and an overwater jetty swing overlooking the Maamunagau Lagoon. Each setting provides a tranquil environment where guests can read while surrounded by natural elements such as ocean breezes and gentle water movement.
Personalisation is a key component of the Beach Reads concept. A new addition to the pre-arrival guest insight form allows visitors to specify their preferred books, genres, or newspapers in advance. These preferences are then incorporated into the guest experience, with tailored reading materials made available upon request through the Island Curator, ensuring a customised and intuitive stay.
The programme also introduces a sustainability element through plantable bookmarks, which serve as biodegradable keepsakes. Guests are encouraged to take these home and plant them, allowing the memories of their reading experience to continue beyond their stay. This initiative reflects the resort’s broader commitment to sustainable luxury while highlighting the impact of small, mindful practices.
With Beach Reads, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort presents reading as more than an activity, positioning it as an immersive experience centred on stillness, reflection, and the value of time spent meaningfully. Whether relaxing above the lagoon or in a secluded corner of The Retreat, guests are invited to step away from everyday distractions and rediscover the enjoyment of reading by the sea.
