On June 30, 2025, Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives welcomed Myles Murphy, a UK native, as its new Marine Biologist, a move that underscores the resort’s dedication to preserving the marine environment. With a Marine Biology degree earned from the University of Newcastle in 2021, Murphy brings extensive experience across diverse aquatic ecosystems, both tropical and temperate. His recent internship with Indo Ocean Project in Indonesia honed his expertise in coral restoration, reef health evaluations, and marine surveys, equipping him to advance the resort’s conservation efforts.
At the resort, Murphy is tasked with leading critical research and collaborating with NGOs and government bodies to protect the delicate marine ecosystems surrounding the Maldives. His role includes overseeing marine surveys and expanding coral propagation initiatives, leveraging his Coral Gardener certification to bolster reef restoration projects. These efforts aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of the region’s marine biodiversity, aligning with the resort’s environmental goals.
Beyond his research responsibilities, Murphy is committed to engaging guests through educational programs. By incorporating citizen science initiatives, he offers visitors opportunities to actively participate in conservation activities, fostering a deeper understanding of marine preservation. His approach combines hands-on learning with conservation awareness, encouraging both guests and the local community to embrace environmental stewardship.
Murphy’s background in geospatial analysis and studying human impacts on marine ecosystems complements Sun Siyam Olhuveli’s sustainability objectives. His appointment strengthens the resort’s reputation as a leader in eco-conscious hospitality in the Maldives. Koen Zuurbier, General Manager at Sun Diving, expressed enthusiasm about Murphy’s arrival, noting that his expertise and passion will elevate the resort’s environmental programs, ensuring the continued health of its surrounding marine ecosystems.
