Male’, Maldives — The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced that the re-printed 100 Rufiyaa note featuring the official Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol will be introduced into circulation on 19 January 2025. This milestone is part of the MMA’s efforts to modernize the nation’s currency and align it with global standards.
Initially scheduled for release on 15 December 2024, the circulation of the note was postponed due to stock-related issues, according to the MMA. The additional time ensured the highest quality standards were met for this significant update.
The re-printed 100 Rufiyaa note will retain its vibrant cultural and historical motifs that celebrate the heritage of the Maldives. The most notable update is the inclusion of the Rufiyaa symbol (ރ), a feature that strengthens the global identity of the Maldivian currency.
The updated note will officially enter circulation on 19 January 2025 and will be distributed through banks and other financial institutions across the country.
The note bears the signature of the former Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority, Ali Hashim, and carries the date 7 July 2024 (1 Muharram 1446), as inscribed on the note itself. This reflects the date of its official printing.
The re-print is widely seen as a positive step in enhancing the usability and international recognition of the Maldivian Rufiyaa. Citizens have expressed enthusiasm for the modernized note, which symbolizes progress while preserving the cultural essence of the currency.
