This September, Ooredoo Maldives brings to life one of the most chilling tales from Maldivian folklore through its innovative Ooredoo Calendar 2025. The legendary figure of Rannamaari takes center stage, offering a glimpse into a story that has fascinated generations. According to tradition, Rannamaari, an evil sea demon, would rise from the ocean each month, appearing as a vessel illuminated by glowing lamps. To prevent disaster, islanders would offer a young maiden as a sacrifice.
The dark cycle persisted until the arrival of Abul Barakat-ul-Barbari, a scholar from the Maghreb who carried the Holy Qur’an in his heart. On the night a maiden was due to be sacrificed, he intervened, offering himself in her stead. Spending the night inside the temple reciting the Qur’an, Abul Barakat confronted Rannamaari, whose advance was halted by the sacred verses. The demon then sank into the sea, never to return.
Launched earlier this year, the Ooredoo Calendar 2025 reinterprets 12 iconic characters from Maldivian folklore using artificial intelligence. Each month highlights a new figure, allowing users to interact directly with the legend via Ooredoo’s AI-powered chatbot. From mystical beings like Santhi Mariyambu to powerful legends such as Rannamaari, the project makes Maldivian folklore more engaging and accessible than ever.
This initiative reflects Ooredoo’s commitment to building a Digital Maldives, leveraging technology to preserve cultural heritage and create meaningful connections across generations. This September, audiences are invited to explore the haunting story of Rannamaari, interact with the legend, and rediscover the enduring magic of Maldivian storytelling.
