Ooredoo Maldives marked a significant advancement in the nation's digital infrastructure with the successful landing of a submarine cable at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. This event represents a historic first, as it is the inaugural submarine cable landing at a Maldivian resort. The project is poised to significantly improve national connectivity, reinforcing the country’s position in the global digital landscape.

The newly installed submarine cable extends through Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and Maafushi, ultimately linking to Ooredoo Maldives’ cutting-edge Data Center located in Hulhumalé. This connection is expected to deliver increased bandwidth, enhanced reliability, and faster internet speeds, laying the foundation for a more resilient and technologically advanced Maldives.

The landing ceremony was held on August 2, 2025, at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. It was attended by high-ranking dignitaries including the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim; Ooredoo Maldives CEO, Mr. Khalid Al-Hamadi; Waldorf Astoria General Manager, TJ Joulak; Chief Executive of the Communication Authority of Maldives, Ilyas Ibrahim; and President of Maafushi City Council, Hassan Solah. Senior representatives from Ooredoo and the resort, along with other distinguished guests, were also present.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Khalid Al-Hamadi emphasized the company's ongoing mission to drive digital progress across the nation. He described the cable landing as a key step in Ooredoo Maldives’ two-decade journey as a leader in telecommunications, contributing to the creation of a "Digital Maldives." He highlighted that Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi now stands as the first private island resort in the country equipped with dual redundancy systems, a dedicated submarine cable, private 5G capabilities, and an advanced tree tower. These features will enable the resort to offer guests next-generation digital services powered by artificial intelligence and ultra-fast connectivity.

Tourism and Environment Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim praised Ooredoo’s efforts since its launch in 2005, noting the company's consistent focus on inclusivity and accessibility. He called the cable landing a proud and historic achievement, especially as it marks the first of its kind at a tourism establishment, and a key step toward a fully connected Maldives.

Waldorf Astoria General Manager TJ Joulak welcomed the opportunity to host the event, stating that seamless connectivity has become essential in delivering the high-level service and customized experiences that today's luxury travelers demand.

As Ooredoo Maldives celebrates its 20th year in the country, this landmark submarine cable landing stands as a testament to its commitment to innovation and community empowerment. The project reflects the company’s broader vision of integrating advanced technology with local culture to support social and economic development, reduce the digital divide, and prepare the Maldives for a connected future.
