The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) has officially announced the appointment of internationally acclaimed sport fishing expert Robert “Fly” Navarro as the Global Ambassador for Maldives Sport Fishing Tourism. This new partnership is a significant step toward positioning the Maldives as a world-class destination for sport fishing and marine tourism.
Navarro, who is the founder of Fly Zone Fishing and co-creator of the prestigious Blue Marlin World Cup—the only global blue marlin tournament—brings more than 30 years of experience in the sport fishing industry. He has fished on six continents and participated in some of the world’s most renowned fishing tournaments. Known for his innovative media work and global reach, Navarro has played a key role in uniting anglers worldwide through compelling content and tournament coverage.
“It is an absolute honour to represent the Maldives on the world stage,” said Navarro. “The Maldives offers some of the most stunning marine environments anywhere on Earth, and its potential as a sport fishing destination is second to none. I’m excited to help share that with the world.”
To kick off his ambassadorial role, Navarro will travel to the Maldives to attend the Burunuboma Global Sport Fishing Tournament, scheduled to take place from May 2nd to 4th, 2025. This international tournament will bring together some of the best anglers from around the globe, who will compete in the Maldives’ pristine waters in pursuit of big game fish such as marlin, sailfish, and other highly sought-after species.
As Global Ambassador, Navarro will play a key role in expanding global awareness of the Maldives’ unique appeal to anglers and ocean adventurers. His responsibilities include strategic media outreach, forging international partnerships, and supporting on-ground initiatives that align with the Maldives’ growing focus on sustainable tourism and marine conservation.
The MMPRC highlighted that Navarro’s appointment marks a pivotal moment in the Maldives’ mission to become a global leader in sport fishing tourism. His deep understanding of the sport fishing community, combined with his passion for marine ecosystems, is expected to drive meaningful progress in promoting responsible tourism practices and elevating the Maldives on the global sport fishing map.
With this collaboration, the Maldives takes a bold step forward in showcasing its rich marine biodiversity, clear turquoise waters, and untapped potential as a premier destination for sustainable sport fishing experiences.
