The Maldives has launched its Third Climate Action Plan, reinforcing its role as a global climate leader. Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim emphasized that this plan showcases the nation’s resolve to combat climate change and elevate its international presence.

At a workshop unveiling the plan, Minister Thoriq underscored its importance for the Maldives’ future, highlighting nationwide consultations that shaped its priorities. The new strategy sets bold targets, aiming to cut 1.52 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions by 2035, while boosting resilience against rising seas and storms.

Though a minor emitter under the Paris Agreement’s five-year update cycle, the Maldives is stepping up with what the Minister called “proactive leadership.” The Ministry of Tourism and Environment, which spearheaded the effort, pinpointed key needs: climate finance, technology, capacity-building, and focus on gender, youth, and education.

The Ministry stressed that global support—through finance and tech under frameworks like the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement—is vital to hit these goals. The workshop also spotlighted the plan’s drafting process and the push for resources to make it reality.
