In a significant move to streamline the nation’s governance, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially merged the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy with the Ministry of Tourism, forming the new Ministry of Tourism and Environment. The decision aims to strengthen the synergy between the Maldives’ tourism sector and its environmental conservation efforts.


The appointment of Thoriq Ibrahim as the first Minister of the newly established ministry was formalized this afternoon at a ceremony held at the President’s Office. Thoriq Ibrahim took his oath of office before Chief Justice, Hon. Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, before receiving his ministerial appointment letter from President Dr. Muizzu.


In a brief address following the ceremony, President Muizzu highlighted the strategic importance of promoting the Maldives as a sustainable tourism destination. He emphasized the need for an integrated approach that showcases the harmony between the nation's unique environmental heritage and its thriving tourism industry.


The merger signals a significant shift in the country’s approach to development, with a focus on promoting sustainable tourism while protecting the Maldives' natural resources.
