In 2025, the Maldives is set to enhance its aviation infrastructure with significant developments aimed at improving connectivity and passenger experience. The new international terminal at Velana International Airport, originally slated for an earlier opening, has been rescheduled to mid-2025.

This decision follows recommendations from the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) to ensure a seamless experience for travelers. The 78,000 square meter terminal is designed to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually and will feature aero boarding bridges, advanced baggage handling systems, retail spaces, food and beverage outlets, and lounges.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that the development of Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll is on track for completion by February 2025. Initiated in February 2021, the project includes a 1,200-meter runway and associated facilities, with an investment of MVR 212 million. Despite facing various challenges, the project is progressing towards its scheduled completion.

The Hanimaadhoo International Airport is undergoing a substantial expansion, with the project expected to be fully operational by July 2025. This development project encompasses a 1.6-mile-long runway, a terminal capable of handling 1.3 million passengers per year, and a jet fuel storage facility.

The terminal, architecturally designed in the shape of a stingray, will offer modern amenities including VIP lounges, prayer rooms, seating areas, and baby care facilities. Additionally, a sea terminal with jetties for seaplanes and ferries is under construction. Supported by the Indian government, this expansion aims to significantly boost tourism and economic activities in the Maldives' northern region.

In addition to this, During his recent visit to Raa Atoll, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured the residents of Fainu Island that an airport would be developed there as part of the administration’s efforts to enhance regional infrastructure and connectivity. The presidential campaign office has also confirmed that the government is committed to constructing the airport, with initial groundwork already underway. The first contracting phase of the project has been completed, and further developmental work is expected to begin soon.

It is also a vision of the current administration to develop an international airport in the heart of Southern Huvadhoo Atoll during the 5 years of its administration.

These developments reflect the Maldives' commitment to strengthening its aviation sector, enhancing passenger experiences, and supporting the nation's growing tourism industry.
