Ooredoo Maldives has upgraded its eSIM activation process with a suite of new security measures aimed at protecting customers from fraud and enhancing the overall safety of digital identity verification. The improved system introduces advanced features to prevent unauthorized SIM swaps, offering a more secure and transparent customer experience.

One of the most significant updates includes a stricter identity validation protocol. Alongside the traditional one-time password (OTP) verification, Ooredoo now requires facial recognition to be matched against the user’s national ID. This additional step serves as a critical safeguard, making it substantially harder for fraudsters to complete unauthorized eSIM transfers.

The company has also integrated cutting-edge Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and real-time Face ID technologies into the process. Customers must now upload an image of their national ID card and complete facial verification, addressing previous vulnerabilities that allowed SIM swaps using only an ID card number and OTP. These enhancements ensure that only the legitimate owner of the SIM can carry out the transaction.

To give users more control in case of suspicious activity, Ooredoo has introduced a rollback option. Before an eSIM swap is finalized, the original SIM holder receives an SMS containing a rollback link that remains active for 72 hours. If fraud is suspected, the user can reverse the change immediately, reducing potential harm and restoring account access promptly.

In addition to security upgrades, Ooredoo has improved communication with customers by sending SMS and email notifications in both Dhivehi and English at every stage of the eSIM process. This bilingual alert system keeps users informed and ensures full transparency during any changes to their SIM profile.

With these enhancements, Ooredoo reinforces its commitment to digital safety, customer trust, and technological innovation. The revised eSIM procedure not only strengthens fraud protection but also sets a new benchmark for telecom security in the Maldives.
