Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), has highlighted the upcoming terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) as a pivotal project for advancing the country’s tourism objectives. In a recent video presentation series organized by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Mr Shiuree emphasized the terminal’s role in expanding the nation's ability to accommodate a growing number of international visitors.
He noted that the development would unlock significant opportunities for both the tourism industry and the broader economy. Reflecting on the success of reaching 2 million tourist arrivals in the previous year, Mr Shiuree expressed confidence that the new terminal would help surpass such achievements. He also stated that the facility is designed to deliver unique, world-class experiences, which will further bolster the Maldives’ global image as a top-tier travel destination.
The terminal is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on July 26, aligning with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence. The event is expected to be officiated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has played a key role in expediting the terminal’s completion. Mr Shiuree acknowledged the President’s personal involvement, noting the multiple directives issued to MACL to ensure timely progress.
Expressing appreciation for MACL’s efforts, Mr Shiuree thanked the company's leadership and staff on behalf of MMPRC, acknowledging their dedication to delivering this nationally significant project. He remarked that their commitment will be remembered and valued long into the future.
As the Maldives’ primary entry point for foreign travelers, Velana International Airport remains integral to the country’s tourism infrastructure. MMPRC continues to work in close coordination with MACL and other sector stakeholders to further enhance service quality and the overall visitor experience.
