The Maldives has once again demonstrated its prominence in the global tourism sector by winning two major accolades at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2025, under the Indian Ocean category. The awards were presented during the WTA Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, which took place on June 28, 2025, at the Johari Rotana in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Representing the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree attended the ceremony to accept the honors on behalf of the nation.
First launched in 1993, the World Travel Awards are widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious programs recognizing excellence across the travel and tourism industry worldwide. These honors serve to celebrate exceptional contributions to the global tourism sector and are considered a benchmark of industry excellence.
This year, the Maldives secured two distinguished titles: “Indian Ocean's Leading Destination 2025,” a title it has consistently held since 2020, and “Indian Ocean's Leading Green Destination 2025,” which the country previously earned in 2024. These wins further solidify the Maldives' reputation as a top-tier destination that combines luxury travel experiences with sustainable practices.
Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree expressed his gratitude and pride, stating that the awards reflect the Maldives’ unmatched appeal as a travel destination and highlight the country’s commitment to delivering memorable experiences to visitors. He also noted that the recognition is a testament to MMPRC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and promote Maldivian tourism on the global stage.
