The Visit Maldives Club (VMC), in collaboration with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC / Visit Maldives), proudly celebrated the successful conclusion of the BurunuBoma Global Sportfishing Tournament 2025, the largest international sportfishing event ever hosted in the Maldives. Held from May 2 to 4, 2025, this landmark tournament showcased the Maldives as a premier sportfishing destination while fostering growth in the nation’s burgeoning sportfishing industry.

Nine competitive teams, including the international Team Dubai, participated in this inaugural event, marking a historic milestone for Maldivian sportfishing. The tournament, adhering to International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules, prioritized sustainability through strict catch-and-release protocols. A notable moment was the Marlin Show in Malé City, where a large Blue Marlin, unfortunately deceased during capture, captivated public attention. The event’s dynamic daily leaderboards fueled excitement, engaging both participants and spectators.

Robert “Fly” Navarro, the Global Ambassador of Maldives for Sportfishing, provided invaluable guidance to the organizing committee and teams. Participants praised the Maldives’ sustainable fishing practices and exceptional experience, reinforcing the country’s potential as a global sportfishing destination. The closing ceremony on May 6, 2025, at Farukolhufushi featured a vibrant boat show and awards presentation, honoring Team Dubai as Champion Team, alongside individual accolades for Best Captain, Best Angler, Best Mate, and Best Video.

MMPRC and VMC expressed deep gratitude to sponsors and partners, including Digital Partner Dhiraagu, Event Management partner Bidhabin, Venue Partner Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and key supporters Shop and Go, Banoon, Kandu Falhu Fishing, Lotus Fihaara, Elite Fishing, and Dhiguveli Maldives. Their contributions ensured a memorable and seamless event.

Global sportfishing communities have lauded the tournament, with overwhelmingly positive feedback highlighting the Maldives’ sustainable practices and scenic waters. Building on this success, VMC and MMPRC have confirmed the next BurunuBoma tournament, anticipating over double the teams in 2026. Details will be announced in the coming months.
